Local answers

Does ChatGPT recommend local businesses?

Yes, sometimes. Ask for a plumber, an HVAC company, or an agency in a city and the answer often names two or three businesses. It is not a map pack and not a paid placement. It is a short list that changes.

Whether it names your shop is a different question. Mentionmill runs the prompt on ChatGPT and Perplexity and shows Named or Not named. That is the only honest way to answer “does it recommend us.” A blog post that says “ChatGPT loves local businesses” does not tell you if you are on the list.

Local prompts work better when they sound like a person: city plus trade, or “near me” plus the job. Brand-only prompts teach you whether the model has heard of you, which is less useful than whether it names you when someone has a leak.

If you are not on the list, treat it like a missing citation, not a branding crisis. One page that answers the question. A listing on a host they already cited. Matching NAP-style facts. Recheck. If you are on the list, watch it. $29/month is the watch.

Mentionmill is not affiliated with OpenAI or ChatGPT. We do not claim the model “recommends” in a legal or advertising sense. We show who got named on that pass. These steps don’t guarantee you’ll get named. Results vary by person and place.

Local businesses still need the map, the phone, and the review. An AI mention is an extra door. Treat it that way. Do not rebuild the company around a pass that named you once. Do not ignore a miss if that prompt is how people now ask. Check. Work the three steps. Watch weekly if it matters.

Trade pages for plumbers and HVAC use the same form with example prompts. Agencies have a page for sending a client a clean yes or no. This page is for the recommendation question itself. The footer does not dump those links. They live in Guides.
